Where economy of scale permits, it may be practical to use a helicopter. Using this technique, a radar altimeter is fitted to the undercarriage of the helicopter and using a GPS, the LOS path is accurately flown. GPS displays will indicate the cross track error (XTE), which is the horizontal distance measured orthogonally from the straight line between the two sites.
